Derbyshire to Bring Strike-Power to Macarthur FC

Macarthur FC coach Ante Milicic has continued to strengthen his inaugural playing squad, with former Premier League striker Matt Derbyshire, putting pen to paper for two years.

The English-born centre-forward, links with Macarthur FC after four years with Cypriot top tier club and competition leaders Omonia Nikosia.

Amassing 148 career goals, Derbyshire brings a wealth of topflight experience to the A-League newcomers, having played 76 matches in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City.

The 34-year old, attacking right footer, earned 14 caps for England’s u/21s from 2007 to 2009 before joining Greek footballing giants Olympiacos scoring 11 goals from 21 appearances.

Macarthur FC Head Coach Ante Milicic said Derbyshire’s experience and recent form in Cyprus, made him the perfect choice to lead the sides attack in the A-League.

“62 goals from 113 appearances, and 10 goal assists for Omonia in Cyprus, plus Premier League experience, Matt is a perfect fit to spear-head our attack.

“Matt is a very strong player who competes on every challenge. Technically sound and good mover on his feet. He is quality finisher and am looking forward to seeing him in the A-League.” Milicic added.

Derbyshire, thanked Milicic for the opportunity to join the expansion club.

“After speaking with Ante about his vision for Macarthur FC, the choice was a simple one, and I thank him for the opportunity to play for the club.

“I have never played in Australia before, and am not only looking forward to the challenge of a top-quality league, but also playing my part in building a new club that the region will be proud of.” Derbyshire said.

Macarthur FC Ambassador Brett Emerton, who played with Derbyshire at Blackburn Rovers, welcomed the Englishman to the club.

“Having played with Matt at Blackburn, I know he will be a perfect fit for the club, an out and out striker. He has three young boys and some family here in Australia. It will be a great opportunity for them to see him play.” Emerton said.

Derbyshire joins fellow signings Tommy Oar, Denis Genreau, Adam Federici and Mark Milligan in Milicic’s inaugural Macarthur FC squad.

Derbyshire will join Macarthur FC after completing 14 days quarantine, after entering Australia.
